Voltage’s Favorite: Places in Pokémon

Yeah, you know how it is, I'm a big Pokemon Fan, you could probably tell. I've thought a lot about the world of Pokemon and the feelings I get from bneing in that fictinoal space. I mean shoot, dude, I have a entire page on this webstie dedicated entirely to showing off which Pokemon I've used in a my copious quantities of Pokemon playthroughs. I ain't above enjoying the largest media franchise in the world.

This list of favorites is 100% meant to be similar to that seen in the lovely video of the same name by the lovely internet grandmother, hazel. We might even say that this page was inspired by it.

Johto Route 35

I don't happen to know why, of all the routes in Johto, Route 35 happens to have my heart (gold). Perhaps it's because I have a deep affinity for Goldenrod City, the space where I would want to live should I have been born in the world of Pokemon instead. Not that I have that deep deisre or naything, but I've given it some real thought. Route 35 acts as a connecting road between Goldenrod City and the National Park (and also the Pokeathalon if you're playing HEart Gold and Soul Silver). There's something very pedestrian about this route, that has some je ne sais quois to it. IT's very clearly between some relevant points of interest, just outside the city. I like to think of this almost as like, a park route of sorts. You're between a major metropolitan area, and a beautiful nature attraction and also a sport complex. Hanging out here you are only a few steps away from MANY different things to do in Johto. The nice little pond on the route add some charm to the space. It makes this troute feel just removed enough from the city to seem fresh, yet still maintaining a very urban feeling.

I really enjoy the music found on this route too. It's on other routes around this stage of the game, but I'm especially partial to it here and on Route 36. Give it a listen!

Something about this track makes me feel confident while on my advetnure. It first plays after the player exists Ilex Forest, shortly after they have obtained their second gym badge, and are beginning to gain a sense of confidence in their skills. Therefore, after beating Whitney and heading North on Route 35, this song returns triumphant, as if telling you "yeah dude, you've got this". This route is made by its theme here, and together the space ends up feeling like a place where the palyer can be confident and certain of themselves, while still being cogniscent of the world areound them.

There's this stretch of grass and trees on the other side of the fences I always found alluring. I would always be very pleased with myself when I could find a way to go behind the fences and find any hidden secrets, people and Pokemon alike. Alas, as with most places in Johot, the Pokemon selection is nothing to write home about, but I don't feel that it detracts from the feeling I get when I'm on Route 35. Maybe if it were a a little easier to find YTanma, I'd be singing this route's praises till the cows come home. Ah well. At some point I'm going to try to get a Yanmega in Heart Gold and or Soul Silver, and when I do, I'm sure Route 35's goodwill might dry up a little, but I'll understand. a 1% chance encounter rate is pretty bogus, especially for new Pokemon.

That one Bridge on Hoenn Route 120

Ooooooooh yeah dude. Look at the water, look at Brendan's reflection, look at the clouds reflected up ion the sky!!! OOOHOHh yeah. This scene only comes as the rainclouds on Route 120 break, revealing the sun overhead once again. It's a magnificent feeling, one of Hoenn's subtle highlights for me. I always love the way the sun peaks through the clouds here as you runacross this bridge. It's a charming little spot. There's not much I have to say here, it's a small little moment on an otherwise very long route, but I think that it really helps set the pace for the exploration. Yeah the last little stretch of the journey may have worn down your Pokemon, but look! the clouds are breaking, you're moving into the next part of the adventure, you are making it happen one step at a time. It's a reassuring space, and I love it.
